Safe As Milk and Captain Beefheart
From the off, this is an old thing. Way before music began, a few years after the Millennium. Time of writing, measures at near‐sixty years old. It’s from the time of anything goes, when fusion was not the aim—you heard this and you heard that, and you tried to do it and whatever came out, that was it. Who knows, someone may hear and like it? Even, in stubbornness, someone may record it—may be a hit? I’m talking here about an album called Safe As Milk, music credited to ‘Captain Beefheart and his Magic Band’. Captain Beefheart was the name of a person, Don Glen Vliet or, later, Don Van Vliet. The Magic Band was, in Wikipedia’s words, ‘a rotating ensemble’.
