Kyuss

When they first seeped in, the press thought, maybe due to the outback, they were some kind of throwback. Or maybe that intro to ‘Blues For The Red Sun’ got them thinking Kyuss were Led Zeppelin. From the start, Brant Bjork was a drummer, held a hard rock beat but then placed heavy stalls while hammering cymbals like he was Ringo reborn. But then Josh Homme had those riffs Carducci called as ‘Ur’. Point is, Mr. Homme had ways of cutting these, or even switching to a stuttered backbeat in a ‘funk’ effect. They’d shuffle these effects through tracks while maintaining propulsion—even ‘solos’ seem like a development of riff. When did you hear Kyuss play an acoustic intro? Maybe one of them wandered off to stretch their legs?
